This beautifully chip-carved merchant’s box originates from Rajasthan and dates to the 19th century. Such boxes were used by Indian merchants and traders in bustling bazaars to store cash, ledgers, and valuable documents. Crafted from solid teak, it is richly detailed with geometric and floral chip carving and bound with iron for strength and security.

Inside, it reveals a fascinating feature — a small interior door leading to a hidden compartment, once used to conceal money or important papers. The deep patina, ironwork, and finely turned feet give this piece wonderful presence and authenticity. A superb example of Indian craftsmanship and design, it now makes a striking decorative piece or practical storage chest.
