This Indian antique etched brass box is from Shekhawati and is an excellent example of the style and dates to the 19th century. These boxes are locally called peti (casket) and were originally used to store the trousseau (bridal clothes & jewellery). Each box is lined with fabric to safeguard the expensive contents. The body of the box is constructed from roheda wood which is clad with iron and brass.

The brass work is delicately hand beaten, etched, and chased with a repeating leaf motif. Between the 17th & 19th centuries, the Marwari merchants of Shekhawati grew incredibly wealthy from taxing traveling caravans. At the time, craftsmanship of this quality would have been expensive.

These boxes are beautiful standalone collectible pieces but are also functional for storing valuables & jewellery.
