Brass Bound Rosewood Jewellery Box from Kutch – 19th Century

This 19th century jewellery box from the Kutch region of Gujarat is a fine example of Anglo-Indian craftsmanship. Made from richly figured rosewood and strengthened with hand-cut brass bindings, it was designed to safely store treasured possessions including jewellery, textiles, documents and cash.

The restrained design reflects the influence of the British presence in India during the 19th century, combining practical campaign-style construction with traditional Indian cabinet-making techniques. Brass corner mounts, straps and the original brass carrying handles not only protected the box during travel but also create a striking contrast against the warm tones of the rosewood.

Opening the lid reveals a thoughtfully arranged interior with a series of small compartments for organising precious items, along with a removable upper tray featuring a shaped divider. Beneath lies a generous storage compartment, making the box as practical today as it was over a century ago.
