This Indian antique etched brass box is from Shekhawati and is one of the best examples of a Shekhawati trousseau box we've found and dates to the 19th century. These boxes are locally called peti (casket) and were originally used to store the trousseau (bridal clothes & jewellery). Each box is lined with fabric to safeguard the expensive contents. The body of the box is constructed from roheda wood which is clad with iron and brass. This worked, hand beaten, etched and chased work is referred to as chithai work and depicts a trailing acanthus flower.
Between the 17th & 19th centuries, the Marwari merchants of Shekhawati grew incredibly wealthy from taxing traveling caravans. At the time, craftsmanship of this quality would have been expensive.
These boxes are beautiful standalone collectible pieces but are also functional for storing valuables & jewellery.
