Cypress wood Altar Table - 19thC. Altar tables were used for ancestor worship in China. Usually a family ancestor portrait would be hung above the table & joss sticks lit & placed on the table for the wellbeing of the household. They were always long & narrow in form - a configuration seldom found in antique European furniture. Woods used were Elm or Walnut. Wealthy families chose more expensive woods such as Red Elm, (Zelkova), Pear and Cypress wood. Our pieces are mostly 19th century & early 20th century. This Altar Table has a single piece of Cypress wood for the top which makes it a highly prized possession for a Chinese person.
