Our collection of antique Chinese hall tables includes wine tables, half tables and coffer tables from across northern China, each hand-restored and chosen for its proportion, patina and craftsmanship. These tables were originally used for serving wine and food, or for presenting flowers, calligraphy and scholar’s objects — now perfectly suited as slim sideboards or console tables in modern interiors.
Half Tables (半桌 Bàn zhuō)
Half tables have existed since before the Ming dynasty, gaining prominence during the Qing dynasty. Often made in pairs, they were positioned end-to-end to extend dining or serving space, and featured depths less than half their width — a defining feature that distinguishes them from full wine tables. Their simple, elegant proportions make them ideal as console tables in narrow hallways or as accent pieces in contemporary homes.
Wine Tables (酒桌 Jiǔ zhuō)
Wine tables were traditionally used for serving wine, tea and light dishes during gatherings. Typically rectangular and slightly deeper than half tables, they represent sociability and refined living in Chinese culture. Many examples in our collection feature northern elm and cypress construction with waisted tops and recessed aprons — hallmarks of Qing-era joinery from Shanxi and Hebei provinces.
Coffer Tables
Coffer tables are among the rarer forms of Chinese furniture, likely used for storing clothing, documents and domestic utensils. Often carved on the front with elegant flanges and fitted drawers, these tables were both decorative and practical. Originating primarily from Shanxi Province, they display the strong linear carving and dark lacquer typical of northern furniture traditions.
