This handsome 19th-century brass bound teak chest from Gujarat is a fine example of the robust travelling chests produced during the British colonial period in India. Constructed from beautifully figured teak and reinforced with brass corner straps and mounts, it was built to endure the rigours of long-distance travel while developing the rich patina that only generations of use can create.
Originally commissioned by officers of the British Indian Army, Anglo-Indian military chests were designed to transport clothing, documents and personal possessions safely across India and beyond. Their practical construction, elegant proportions and exceptional craftsmanship have made them highly sought-after today, equally suited as coffee tables, blanket chests or statement storage pieces in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
The spacious interior includes an original candle box with sliding wall to one side, ideal for storing smaller items, while a sturdy iron chain supports the lid when opened, protecting the original brass hinges from strain. Two generously sized drawers beneath the main compartment provide additional concealed storage, and substantial brass carrying handles on each side allowed the chest to be moved when required. Finished with attractive brass mounts and a beautifully aged surface, this is a practical and decorative antique with timeless appeal.
