This early 19th-century teak chest comes from Gujarat, India. Constructed from solid teak, it has developed a rich, dark patina and retains its original hand-forged iron corner straps, lock plate and carrying handles.
The chest stands on low feet with discreet wheels, making it easier to move despite its robust construction. Inside is a large storage space with the original candle box to one side, while a chain prevents the lid from opening too far and placing strain on the hinges.
The chest has been sympathetically restored in our Wiltshire workshop, retaining the marks, wear and character acquired through more than two centuries of use. Its compact proportions make it an excellent storage chest and equally suitable for use as a coffee table.
