This rustic chest was made to last in the 19thC from thick teakwood and then iron and brass bound to give it extra strength.

It has traces of the original blue paint which gives it a great €œshabby chic€ look €œ.

Chests like this were €œcustom made€ by the head of the family , who commissioned a carpenter to make one to store  valuables such as textiles, jewellery , dowry and cash.  They we€™re locked with strong padlocks for maximum security.

Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India

This chest is the perfect height and depth  for a coffee table.
