Painted Bikaner Roheda Door - 19th Century

This exceptional 19th-century painted door from Bikaner, Rajasthan, is crafted from dense roheda wood (tecomella undulata), a timber indigenous to the Thar Desert and prized for its durability and fine carving qualities. Architectural doors of this type once formed the grand entrances to havelis and courtyard homes, combining strength with ornate artistry.

The façade is dominated by a beautifully carved Mughal arch, richly detailed with scrolling floral motifs and stylised birds nestled within the curvature — a hallmark of Indo-Islamic decorative vocabulary. Layers of historic paint in deep red and turquoise have weathered over time, creating a remarkable patina that reveals successive generations of surface treatment. The interplay of colour, carving and age gives the piece extraordinary depth and character.
