This antique Indian military chest dates to the 19th century and is the perfect size for a coffee table. It is constructed from beautifully patinated teak and has its original iron fittings. The front is a single panel of teak wood with a distinctive grain.

Military chests were used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour, they were made to order and had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit. Woods used were dependent on rank, and chests were reinforced with brass or iron corners for extra strength.

This particular piece is typical of the Gujarat style.
