Vintage Blue Painted Sideboard From Shanxi

This beautifully characterful blue painted vintage sideboard originates from Shanxi province in northern China, close to the border with Inner Mongolia. The surface has been carefully stripped of its later black paint layer to reveal the original icy blue tones beneath, creating a softly weathered finish well suited to kitchens, bathrooms, or contemporary interiors.

The hand-painted doors depict elegant vases filled with flowers alongside traditional “wise objects,” including books and scholarly items associated with learning, prosperity, and harmony. These motifs were commonly used on domestic furniture to reflect refinement and cultural values within the home.

Originally top opening, this sideboard has been sensitively adapted by converting the front panels into doors, making it more practical for modern living. Internally, it offers two cupboard compartments divided by a shelf, along with two drawers above, combining functionality with traditional design.
