This beautifully painted 19th century sideboard comes from Qinghai Province in north-western China, a region bordering Mongolia where Chinese and Tibetan cultures have intertwined for centuries. While the cabinet's robust form reflects the practical furniture of the nomadic peoples of the region, its finely executed painted panels display a distinctly Chinese artistic influence.
Each of the three doors is decorated with an original hand-painted panel. The outer doors depict tranquil mountain landscapes with temples, pagodas and winding paths, while the central panel illustrates an elegant scholar's arrangement comprising a flowering vase, an incense burner and a brush holder with writing brushes. Together these motifs celebrate the ideals of scholarship, contemplation and harmony with nature—subjects that were highly prized in Chinese literati culture.
Constructed from locally sourced timber, most likely elm, poplar or pine, the cabinet was designed for everyday storage of clothing, bedding or grain. It would also have served as a household altar cabinet, displaying ancestral tablets or treasured objects while providing generous enclosed storage.
Behind the three doors are three removable shelves, offering flexible storage for modern living. The beautifully weathered painted decoration, combined with the rich patina of the timber, makes this an exceptional statement piece that blends practicality with centuries of artistic tradition.
