Painted Sideboard From Mongolia - 19th Century

This striking 19th century painted sideboard originates from Mongolia and would originally have been used by nomadic families for the storage of clothing, bedding or grain. Cabinets of this type were also used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship.

Originally constructed with a closed front and accessed through a hatch in the top, the cabinet has subsequently been adapted with front-opening doors, making it far more practical for use today. Two lower drawers provide additional storage.

The most distinctive feature is the wonderfully preserved painted decoration. The two doors depict detailed courtly administrative scenes with groups of figures and officials within architectural settings. Much of the original painted finish also survives across the frame, with natural wear and losses developed through generations of use.
