This antique Indian grain measure dates to the 19th century and is over 100 years old. This style is most often from Rajasthan in Northern India and is constructed from teak wood and iron. Grain measures like these were used in markets for measuring wheat, corn, rice, and pulses. In the old days, the Indian measures were Seers & Pattis.
Pieces like this have been used every day, handed down generations by families in India, and develop a rich warm patina. This particular measure has symbols etched into the wood. Perhaps a prayer or the name of the owner.
These make fabulous planters or decorative features.
