These authentic 19th-century dog gates originate from Gujarat, India, where they were traditionally positioned in front of the main entrance doors of Gujarati havelis. Designed to prevent livestock and stray animals from entering the household while maintaining ventilation and visibility, such gates formed an essential architectural feature of traditional homes throughout the region.
Constructed from solid teak with hand-forged iron bars, this pair displays the robust craftsmanship and practical elegance characteristic of Gujarati architectural elements. The upper sections feature decorative pierced geometric fretwork, providing visual interest while softening the strong linear form of the iron bars below. The warm patina of the aged teak contrasts beautifully with the weathered ironwork, creating a timeless appearance that reflects generations of use.
Today, antique dog gates are valued not only for their historical significance but also for their versatility as decorative architectural pieces. Equally suitable as garden gates, courtyard features, room dividers, or wall-mounted decorative panels, they bring character, texture, and a sense of history to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
