This exquisitely carved antique door hails from Surat, Gujarat - one of India's oldest port cities and a long-standing centre of artisanal craftsmanship. Dating to the 19th century and made from solid teak, the door is richly embellished with deeply carved floral medallions and foliate motifs, each hand-finished with care and imbued with symbolic meaning. Traces of original pink, green, and lilac polychrome paint soften the sculptural detail, lending the piece a faded elegance and quiet vibrancy.

As with most traditional Indian doors, this one would originally have opened inwards on a pin-and-post system rather than hinges. A chain still present at the top of the frame hints at its historic function- used to padlock the doors shut when the home was empty. The frame has since been sensitively adapted for hanging with modern hinges, making it suitable for reuse as a functioning doorway or as an architectural focal point in a contemporary interior.

This rare survivor was salvaged from a structure no longer in repairable condition. While substantial in scale and weight, Indigo Antiques offers expert delivery and can advise on installation to suit your space. Hinge and hanging solutions can be tailored to your project requirements.
