These impressive 19th-century dog gates originate from a temple in Gujarat and are a wonderful example of traditional Indian architectural craftsmanship. Retaining layers of beautifully weathered blue paint over their original timber construction, the gates possess a striking patina that has developed through decades of exposure and use. Their elegant arched silhouette and decorative finials create a distinctive architectural presence, making them as visually appealing today as when they were first installed.
Traditionally positioned within temple and courtyard entrances, dog gates were designed to allow airflow and visibility while preventing animals from entering sacred or private spaces. The slender iron bars retain traces of their original polychrome paintwork, introducing subtle flashes of colour that contrast beautifully with the distressed blue timber frame. Rich in character and history, these gates make a remarkable decorative feature, whether displayed as wall art or incorporated into an interior design scheme.
