Red Leather Trunk From Shanghai - 19th Century

Leather Trunks have been used for many hundreds of years in China with the classic style changing very little. Made for travelling and storage of clothing they are robust and work well in a contemporary western space as a coffee table, or for storage. Chinese leather trunks come in 4 colours; black, red, cream & aubergine.

This particular piece dates to the 19th century and has a beautifully engraved locking plate and early brass handles. The interior is decorated in original floral block printed fabric. The rich red of the trunk itself is achieved by adding a coloured lacquer onto the tanned leather of the trunk itself.
