Red Lacquer Leather Trunk From Shanghai - Ca 1920

Chinese Leather Trunks have been used for many hundreds of years with the classic style changing very little. Made for travelling and storage of clothing they are robust and work well in a contemporary western space as a coffee table, or for storage. Chinese leather trunks come in 4 colours; black, red, cream & aubergine.

This particular piece is red and dates from the early 20^th century. The colour is achieved by adding a coloured lacquer onto the tanned leather. It has its original hardware and handles with a stamp on the inside of the lid. As with nearly all leather trunks the original leather hinges have deteriorated due to inherent weakness in the design. Metal hinges have been added to replace the deteriorating leather hinge.
