This 19th century black lacquer sideboard comes from Shanxi Province, China. Originally constructed as a top-opening storage chest, it has later been converted to open from the front, making it far more practical for use in a modern interior.
Cabinets of this type were traditionally used by nomadic families for storing clothing, bedding and grain, and could also serve as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. The simple black lacquer finish has worn naturally over time, revealing the timber beneath and creating a wonderfully aged patina.
Two large doors open to a spacious interior fitted with removable shelves, providing useful storage while retaining the character of the original piece.
