This excellent example of a Shanxi sideboard has its original red lacquer dating from the 19th century (Qing dynasty 1644 - 1911). This design was classic of the Chinese Ming & Qing dynasties and the doors show faded scenes of everyday life painted using original mineral pigments. It has retained its original brass hardware.

Shanxi sideboards were usually made from locally sourced wood, in this case, northern elm wood (榆木 yumu). This style of sideboard was a staple in Shanxi province and would have been used as altar cabinets, for burning incense and making offerings to the ancestors. An ancestor painting would often be hung above.
