This exquisite pair of antique painted doors come from Bundi Rajasthan. These are very special pieces and rare to find now - the degraded blue paint would have been faced externally, perhaps onto an interior courtyard. The reverse of the door features two facing dancers. The painting style has similarities to Bundi & Kishangarh work suggesting these to have come from that area. The style merges Mughal & Rajput cultural themes as became customary in Rajasthani architecture of the 18th & 19th centuries.
This door and the interior painting date to the 18th century, the blue paint is later - 19th century. The dancers hold rosewater sprinklers (gulab pash) in one hand and bowls of fabric in the other, perhaps for washing guests as they arrived.
The two dancers or serving ladies with long curling hair in traditional dress carrying covered baskets. Below them is an intricate floral display in rich reds and yellows tree of life designs. The piece would make a fantastic piece of wall art. Hangers can be fitted on request.
