Painted Sideboard From Mongolia - 19th Century

This vibrant antique Mongolian sideboard dates to the 19th century and originates from the nomadic cultures of Mongolia and Northern Shanxi. Traditionally used for storing grain, clothing, or other household items, these pieces often served double duty as family altar cabinets, playing a central role in ancestor worship ceremonies.

The cabinet retains its richly painted floral decoration, with vivid red and orange panels and intricate peony and chrysanthemum motifs symbolising prosperity and longevity. The original top-opening hatch has been sensitively modified into functional front-facing doors, making it ideal for modern storage while preserving its historical spirit.
