This painted low cabinet is from Mongolia and dates to the 19th century (Qing Dynasty 1644 - 1911). This piece has beautiful original floral and ornithological paintings. Chinese writing is also evident in the corners of the image panels, most likely telling a story or poem. The front panels would originally have been fixed and this cabinet would have opened from the top. It likely would have been used for storage of bedding and clothing.Â

This style of unit is sometimes referred to as a kang unit. Kang cabinets like this one are ideal for use beneath a TV or sound system and date from the 19th century. These were used beside the Kang which was a raised stone platform used as a bed or lounging area in wealthy homes. Traditionally, this was heated from underneath in the winter.Â
