This painted kang cabinet was made in Mongolia during the 19th century and retains its original painted decoration in soft, timeworn tones. Constructed from elm, it is a fine example of Mongolian furniture designed for everyday use yet imbued with character and artistry.
Kang cabinets were traditionally placed beside the kang€”a raised platform bed or lounging area often made of stone, heated from beneath in winter for warmth. These cabinets provided convenient storage while also adding beauty to the living space with their decorative painted panels. Today, the piece carries a rich patina from age and use, making it both a functional and atmospheric addition to an interior.
