This antique brass chapati box dates to the 19th century and originates from Rajasthan in Northern India, where such vessels were traditionally used for storing and transporting chapatis and naan bread. Everyday objects like these formed an essential part of domestic life and were valued for both their practicality and durability. Over time, they developed the beautifully worn patina that makes old Indian brassware so desirable today.

Handcrafted from hammered brass, this example features finely engraved concentric geometric borders across the lid surrounding an elegant floral handle. The original clasp fastening remains intact and the interior still shows the hand-hammered texture created during manufacture. Its warm aged surface, subtle imperfections and signs of long use all contribute to the rich character of the piece.

Today, antique chapati boxes make wonderful decorative objects and can also be used for storing jewellery, keepsakes or serving breads at the dining table. Their sculptural form and historic charm sit equally well in traditional or contemporary interiors.
