Brass Indian Chapati Box - Ca 1900

These antique brass chapati boxes originate from Rajasthan in Northern India and date to the early 20th century. Traditionally used for carrying chapatis or naan bread, they formed part of daily domestic life and were often taken to work or on long journeys as practical portable food containers. Their simple rounded forms and engraved decoration reflect the enduring beauty of Indian utilitarian craftsmanship.

Handcrafted from brass, this example features finely engraved geometric patterns across the lid inspired by motifs found in Indian temple architecture. The box retains its original clasp fastening and carries the marks of a well-used life, including small dents, scratches and the hand-punched Hindi inscription of a previous owner.
