This pretty little Indian brass box is from Kerala in South India and is often referred to as a 'vettile chellam'. It would have been used for storing valuables; jewelry, paan, and money and has an internal divider. Nowadays it could be used as a jewelry box.Â
Â
The lock is typical of South Indian boxes and matches those used on nettur petti Kerala boxes. Betel is often chewed in India with a preparation called 'paan'. Paan is created using small parcels of betel leaves, areca nuts, slaked lime, and tobacco.Â
As our Indian boxes are vintage dating between 50 & 150 years old, they usually have some small marks and dents from original use which adds to their character.
