This antique Japanese step tansu is known in Japan as a kaidan dansu. it dates to the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). Kaidan dansu are the most iconic of Japanese tansu and were evidently prominent as shown by their feature in various woodblock prints including Toyokuni and Kuninao. They were designed as freestanding units and were more often used in shops and brothels. The design originated in Northern Honshu island.

This piece like most Japanese furniture has excellent carpentry is constructed from hinoki (cedar) and cryptomeria woods. It has multiple compartments, drawers & sliding doors. Light, but well made and in the traditional way, this Japanese tansu has its original black painted iron fittings. The drawer pulls (hikite) are leech shaped.

It comes apart into two pieces for easier maneuvering.
