Description

This Japanese antique mizuya dansu kitchen cabinet originates from Hikone and dates to the late Edo period (1603–1868). An exceptional example of traditional Japanese cabinetry, it combines beautifully figured native timbers, refined craftsmanship and an abundance of practical storage.

Mizuya dansu were traditionally used in Japanese kitchens for storing food, crockery, cooking utensils and other household essentials. Their distinctive arrangement of sliding doors, drawers and open compartments reflects the importance of efficient, carefully organised storage in the Japanese home.

This substantial cabinet is constructed from a combination of three traditional Japanese timbers, each selected for its particular qualities. Zelkova (keyaki) is used for the drawer fronts and decorative panels, displaying a wonderful swirling grain and rich, warm colour. Cryptomeria (sugi) has been used for the slatted sliding doors and side panels, while the main carcass is constructed from hinoki (Japanese cypress), a timber particularly valued for its stability and durability.

The façade features an arrangement of sliding doors, multiple drawers and spacious shelved compartments. Of particular interest are the upper sliding doors incorporating wire mesh panels, a characteristic feature of Japanese kitchen cabinetry. These provided ventilation for stored food and kitchenware while offering protection from pests.

The cabinet has developed a wonderfully rich patina, with the warm tones and distinctive grain patterns of the different timbers adding depth and character. Its substantial proportions and excellent storage capacity make it an exceptionally versatile piece, ideal for use as a kitchen dresser, dining room cupboard or statement storage cabinet in a contemporary interior.

The cabinet separates into two sections for easier transportation, a traditional and highly practical feature of Japanese tansu furniture.
