This Japanese Kaidan Tansu (step chest) dates from the Meiji period and is one of the most recognisable forms of traditional Japanese furniture. Originally designed to provide access to the upper floors of machiya townhouses, shops and teahouses, these ingenious pieces combined the function of a staircase with practical storage. Their distinctive silhouette became so iconic that they frequently appeared in ukiyo-e woodblock prints by artists including Toyokuni and Kuninao.
Constructed from hinoki (Japanese cypress) and Cryptomeria, the chest displays the clean lines and exceptional joinery for which Japanese furniture is renowned. The warm timber has developed a rich, mellow patina over more than a century, beautifully complemented by the original blackened iron handles, hinges and lock fittings.
Offering an abundance of storage, the Kaidan Tansu features seven drawers of varying sizes together with a generous cupboard enclosed by double doors, fitted with an internal shelf. A particularly practical feature is its two-piece construction, allowing the chest to separate into upper and lower sections for easier transportation and installation.
Equally suited to traditional or contemporary interiors, this versatile piece can be used as a statement storage cabinet, bookcase, display unit or hallway cupboard, celebrating the timeless practicality and understated elegance of Japanese design.
