This exceptional sunburst-carved almirah cabinet would be difficult to find in India now. We purchased this almirah back from a keen eyed customer looking to downsize. It dates to the 19th century and hails from Saurashtra, Gujarat in western India. The frame is crafted from richly aged solid teak, but the unique two tone features are achieved by its four deeply carved panels, and two drawers, crafted in solid carved rosewood.

Unlike many traditional Indian cabinets which were built into walls, this piece is freestanding; a less common and more desirable form. Its bold proportions, hand-carved floral details, and twin middle drawers suggest it was once a prized household storage piece, likely used for textiles.

The sunburst motif reflects the fusion of colonial Portuguese design with local Indian artistry - evidence of the cross-cultural trade and aesthetic exchange that flourished in port cities along India's western coast.
