This striking 19th-century Indian garden bench combines sturdy craftsmanship with sculptural decorative elements. The seat and back are formed from simple wooden slats, creating a practical and comfortable design, while the dramatic cast metal ends provide an eye-catching contrast. Each side is cast in the form of a large wading bird—resembling a stork or crane—standing amongst stylised reeds and foliage, giving the bench a distinctly playful and decorative character.
The cast iron sides retain layers of beautifully weathered paint in turquoise and red, with areas of natural oxidation that have developed over time. This patina, combined with the aged wooden slats, gives the piece a wonderful sense of history and authenticity. Benches of this type were commonly used in colonial gardens and public spaces throughout India during the late 19th century, valued for their durability as well as their decorative appeal.
