This striking six-fold Japanese byōbu screen is painted in the Rinpa style, one of Japan’s most celebrated decorative traditions, known for its bold compositions and luminous gold grounds. Dating to around circa 1970, it depicts abundant flowering peonies emerging amongst softly undulating green rock forms, their full white blossoms and layered foliage unfolding rhythmically across a radiant gold leaf field. The composition moves gracefully across the panels, balancing open negative space with richly painted botanical detail to create both energy and calm.

Peonies on gold form an iconic motif within Japanese screen painting, long associated with elegance, prosperity and seasonal abundance. Here, that timeless aesthetic is reinterpreted as a refined 20th-century decorative work, designed to bring warmth, texture and quiet drama into an interior. Hand-painted using mineral pigments on paper and framed within a finely detailed silk brocade border and dark lacquered wooden frame, the screen offers versatility as either a wall-mounted artwork or a freestanding architectural feature. Its generous scale and golden glow make it a confident focal point in both contemporary and traditional settings.
