Japanese Cloisonne Cobalt Blue Vase - Meiji Period

This elegant Japanese cloisonné vase dates from the late Meiji period, circa 1890–1910. The tall, finely proportioned body is covered in a striking deep cobalt blue enamel. Cobalt arrived in Japan at the end of the 19th century and became very popular with artisans. 

The vase is decorated with flowering magnolia branches and other foliage, accompanied by a bird depicted in flight. The design is created using the traditional cloisonné technique, with fine metal wires defining the individual areas of coloured enamel. Decorative borders around the rim and foot provide a restrained finishing detail.

There is an area of historic damage to the enamel on the reverse of the vase, clearly shown in the photographs. This is stable and does not compromise the structural integrity of the vase. We feel that the wear forms part of the history of this antique piece and have left it visible rather than attempting to disguise it.
