This traditional milking stool from Shanxi province was made in elm around the turn of the 20th century. The round seat sits on three slightly splayed legs, joined by cross-braced stretchers for stability. The wood shows the pale, time-softened surface of age, with visible grain, marks from decades of agricultural use, and historic iron staple repairs€”evidence of its long working life and the value placed on keeping such a practical item in service.

Originally used for milking and other farm chores, this type of stool was valued for its portability and simple, sturdy build. Today, it makes an attractive occasional seat or side table with authentic rustic character.
