This magnificent 19th-century teak horse head corbel originates from Gujarat and was originally carved as an architectural element for a grand doorway, where the horse traditionally symbolised strength, prosperity, and protection. Boldly sculpted from a single solid block of teak, the carving is powerful and expressive, with deeply modelled features, pronounced musculature, and confident, assured detailing that speaks to the skill of the original craftsman.
Over time, the teak has developed a rich, lustrous patina, with surface wear, age cracks, and softened edges that bear witness to its long architectural life. Now mounted on a simple iron stand, the corbel has been transformed into a striking sculptural object, allowing its dramatic form and material character to be fully appreciated within a contemporary interior setting.
