These colourful and characterful Indian horse figurines date to the 19th century and were made and painted in Surat. Surat was one of the main trading posts for the British in India and found new prosperity with the opening of India's railways exporting silks, gold & silver across the globe.
Production of these figurines began in the mid 19th century with an example from 1965 on display in the V&A museum. A larger inferior example can be found in the National Crafts Museum in New Delhi.
The figure features intricate polychrome work and is full of character and would make a wonderful decorative ornament or gift. At over one hundred years old, it still retains its vibrant colour and intricate detailing.
