This striking tribal food bowl from Nagaland in North East India is a beautifully sculptural and highly functional piece, traditionally used for everyday dining by the Konyak tribe and other Naga communities. Hand-carved from a single block of wood, its elegant pedestal form elevates the shallow bowl, giving it both presence and practicality.
The surface has developed a deep, rich patina through years of use, with warm tonal variations and a softly worn finish that reflect its utilitarian past. The gently curved supports and open base create a sense of movement and balance, while the broad, shallow dish would have been used for serving or sharing meals within the household.
Nagaland remains one of India’s most culturally distinct regions, with strong tribal traditions. The Konyak, one of the largest Naga tribes, are particularly known for their rich heritage and craftsmanship. Pieces such as this offer a tangible connection to daily life in these communities, where functional objects were shaped with both skill and an inherent sense of design.
