Carved Chinese Storage Cabinet from Shanxi - 19thC

This provincial country cabinet is from Shanxi province in Northern China. It has retained hints of its original painted finish and original iron hardware.

Cabinets like these were probably custom made for a farming family and would have been painted black. At some point in its life, it was stripped back from its original finish.

It dates from the 19th century, is over 150 years old, and was constructed from elm and walnut wood. The carvings are in the traditional Shanxi style.
