This antique compound cabinet (dasijiangui) dates to the 19th century, Qing dynasty (1644€“1911), and is an excellent example of the refined cabinetry associated with Beijing and the surrounding Hebei province. Unlike the camphorwood versions more commonly found in Tianjin, this piece is constructed from richly grained northern elm wood (yumu 榆木), which has developed a warm, lustrous patina over the decades. The natural figuring of the wood is beautifully showcased on the large front panels, giving the cabinet a striking presence. Originally this cabinet would have been lacquered with a burgundy lacquer which can still be seen inside.

The cabinet features a pair of doors with their original brass hardware, opening to reveal shelves and drawers for storage. Beneath, the lower apron is finely hand-carved with a scrolling foliate design, adding a decorative flourish that balances the simplicity of the main body. Originally, such compound cabinets would have included a hat box and been used to store garments and bedding, with the lower section accommodating bulkier items. Their scale and elegance made them central furnishings in grand households, and some were so tall that ladders were required to access them. Today, this piece makes a statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors, prized for its craftsmanship and beautiful wood grain.
