This elegant Chinese red elm cabinet originates from Suzhou and dates to the 18th century - Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Beautifully proportioned, it follows the restrained furniture tradition established during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), where clean lines, balanced proportions and the natural beauty of the timber take precedence over elaborate decoration.

The cabinet has a subtly tapered form, with two large panelled doors framed by rounded uprights and retaining its traditional metal door fittings. The red elm (zelkova) / southern elm (榉木 / jumu) has developed a particularly rich, warm patina. Its original brass

Opening the doors reveals a contrasting black lacquered interior with two shelves, providing generous storage. Cabinets of this type were traditionally used for storing silks, bedding, clothing and other household textiles.

Its simplicity and scale make this a remarkably versatile antique for a contemporary interior. It would work beautifully as a wardrobe or linen cupboard, while the understated Suzhou design allows the quality of the timber and craftsmanship to speak for itself.
