    Product Description & Specifications

    Title

This carved Indian teak panel from a Ratha Yatra chariot depicts an antelope & squirrel in a foliate surrounding. The antelope is one of the Hindu god Lord Shiva's manifestations. This depiction is an uncommon topic.

Ratha Yatra chariots are found mostly in Tamil Nadu, South India, and enormous temples on wheels are drawn through the streets by hundreds of people. They are decorated with hundreds of religiously significant images. Originally this piece would have been coated with pitch (a black tar-like substance) of which remnants can still be seen.
