This antique Indian chest dates to the 19th century and is from the state of Gujarat. It is constructed from teak wood and is bound with iron and reinforced brass. It has been mounted on four wheels for easy transportation from room to room.

One of its most noticeable features is its beautifully carved lock plate which is carved in the style most often found in Gujarat. It has a wonderful patina but has been conservatively restored in our workshops. An early 20th century repair to the top of the chest suggests a break in by thieves showing its colourful and long life.

These chests would have been used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewelry & cash. There is also an interior box for storing candles which would have been valuable, especially in the darker times of the year.
