This striking 19th century black lacquer sideboard comes from Qinghai province, on the border with Mongolia, and beautifully reflects the region’s cultural crossroads. The bold, architectural form has a clear Mongolian influence, while the decoration feels distinctly Chinese: each door is painted with elegant vases and flowering branches, originally heightened with silver leaf that was once varnished to read more like gold. With time and use, the varnish has naturally worn away, revealing the silvery decoration beneath and giving the piece its wonderfully atmospheric, time-softened look.
Traditionally, cabinets of this type were used by nomadic families for the storage of clothing, bedding, and grain, and they were also commonly used as altar cabinets for family ancestor worship. Inside, the cabinet is practical and spacious, fitted with removable shelving behind four doors—ideal for modern living while retaining its original character and patina.
