This striking antique red lacquer cabinet originates from Shanxi province in Northern China and dates to the 19th century. Cabinets of this type are often referred to as “wedding cabinets” in the West, though the name is largely a romantic invention of antique dealers rather than a documented Chinese tradition. In reality, cabinets like this were owned by scholars and wealthy households and used to store clothing, bedding, valuables, and scholarly objects.
The cabinet is finished in a vibrant red lacquer created from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, a painstaking and highly skilled process requiring multiple layers of lacquer built up over time. The red ground is decorated with delicate gilt maki-e style motifs depicting flowering plants, foliage, and birds, creating a refined decorative composition that contrasts beautifully against the lacquer surface. Historically, lacquer furniture was extremely costly to produce—contemporary records suggest lacquer pieces could be up to fifteen times more expensive than comparable hardwood furniture.
Inside, the cabinet retains a practical interior layout with a single shelf and two removable panels that reveal a concealed compartment beneath—an ingenious feature used for storing valuables or important personal items. The cabinet stands on simple legs with a subtly shaped apron, and retains its original metal lock plate at the centre of the doors.
