This 19th century elm sideboard originated as a farmhouse grain store from the border region between Mongolia and Gansu Province in northern China. Built to withstand daily agricultural life, its substantial elm carcass and original iron bindings have ensured its survival for well over a century, while developing the rich colour and character that only age can create.
Originally, this piece would have opened from the top to store grain safely away from damp and pests. At some point in its working life, it was thoughtfully converted into a five-door sideboard, creating a highly practical storage cabinet whilst retaining its original structure and rustic charm. The simple panelled doors, iron strapwork and brass ring pulls complement the clean architectural lines, making it equally at home in traditional and contemporary interiors.
Behind the five doors are generous storage compartments fitted with removable shelves, providing excellent versatility for use as a dining room sideboard, media unit or large hallway cabinet. The beautifully figured elm displays striking grain patterns and a warm honey patina, while the original iron reinforcements speak to its utilitarian origins.
Furniture of this type reflects the resourcefulness of rural northern China and Mongolia, where pieces were often adapted over generations as household needs changed. Today, this sympathetic conversion has given the cabinet a new lease of life while preserving the craftsmanship and history of the original grain store.
