This impressive Japanese antique mizuya dansu originates from Hikone and dates to the Meiji period (1868–1912), circa 1900. Traditionally used in Japanese kitchens for the storage of food, crockery and utensils, mizuya dansu were designed to combine generous practical storage with the refined craftsmanship characteristic of Japanese furniture.
The cabinet is constructed using a combination of traditional Japanese timbers, with a Hinoki (Cypress) frame, Cryptomeria sides and interior, and beautifully figured Red Elm used for the drawer fronts and door panels. The different woods give the cabinet a particularly rich and varied appearance, enhanced by a warm patina developed through more than a century of use. The façade is arranged with numerous drawers and spacious compartments concealed behind traditional sliding doors. Finely ribbed wooden panels, decorative openwork and mesh detailing provide additional visual interest, while the dark iron ring handles contrast beautifully with the warm tones of the timber.
Despite its impressive size, the cabinet has an elegant, balanced appearance. The combination of numerous small drawers and large shelved compartments makes it an exceptionally practical piece of antique storage furniture, equally suited to use as a kitchen cabinet, linen cupboard or statement storage piece in a living or dining room.
The cabinet separates into two sections for easier transportation. An original handwritten Japanese paper note remains attached to the reverse, adding another fascinating element to its history.
