This Japanese antique mizuya dansu chest dates from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) and is constructed from hinoki wood (cypress) with keyaki (red elm/zelkova) panels. It is made in the Tokyo style and the recessed brass panel handles depict the flowers with a waxing crescent moon. Mizuya were usually used in the kitchen for food and crockery storage.

All the ironwork is original. The iron drawer pulls (hikite) on the front are leech (hirute) shaped which was a classic shape used during the Meiji period. This tansu is constructed in two parts with locator pins to keep the top in place. The pole hangers (saodoshi) are concealed and not covered by a metal plate showing this as an earlier piece.

There is a money box at the bottom right side with 2 secret drawers.
